Life Kingsbury Hospital is a relatively small, but surgically orientated hospital.

About Dr Malcolm Dewar Urologist Life Kingsbury Hospital

The tranquil grounds and cottage atmosphere belie the fact that it is a centre of excellence in vascular, colorectal, ENT, orthopedic, plastic, and general surgery. Originally a maternity hospital, the obstetrics and gynaecology service at the hospital remains strong.

There are eleven modern operating theatres, including a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterisation laboratory, a hybrid vascular theatre, and the robotic surgery theatre. The surgical services are supported by a large high care and intensive care unit, a renal dialysis unit, and a diagnostic and interventional radiology service.

Cape Urology is the oldest and largest urology practice in South Africa. There are seven full-time urologists working across four hospitals, with four of them working at Kingsbury Hospital. This practice set-up allows for excellent administrative support, improved decision making, and better after-hours cover. Additionally, the larger practice has improved inter-urologist referrals and allowed the individual urologists to focus on areas of interest. For the past seven years, Dr Dewar has been referred most of the complex urological cancer cases in the practice.

A multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach is one of the keys to excellent surgical care. In the hospital, Dr Dewar has excellent support from internal medicine specialists (including intensive care specialists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, and endocrinologists), vascular and general surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, clinical oncologists, stomatherapists, dietitians, physiotherapists, and specialised nurses. This team works together to develop personalized treatment plans. This collaborative approach ensures that every aspect of a patient’s care is carefully considered, leading to more effective treatment strategies and improved quality of life.

Dr Dewar participates in an online multidisciplinary cancer board meeting that takes place regularly, and incorporates urologists, clinical oncologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine specialists, and pathologists. Difficult cases are presented and discussed at these meetings. This tumour board approach helps to improve multidisciplinary care and decision making.

The team at Kingsbury Hospital is dedicated to innovation, precision, and compassionate care. This is a centre that prioritizes expertise, advanced technology, and a patient-first philosophy.
